Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Obama, Sr. (born in Nyanza Province, Kenya) and Ann Dunham (born in Wichita, Kansas)

John McCain was born on August 29, 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in Panama to naval officer John S. McCain, Jr. (1911-1981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912).

Obama's parents separated when he was two years old and later divorced. His father went to Harvard University to pursue Ph.D. studies, then returned to Kenya, where he died in an auto accident in 1982. His mother married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian foreign student, with whom she had one daughter. The family moved to Jakarta in 1967, where Obama attended local schools from ages 6 to 10. Obama still speaks "passable" Bahasa, the Indonesian language

Barack Obama returns to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School, a private college preparatory school, from 5th grade until his graduation in 1979.
 

United States Naval Academy at Annapolis

John McCain entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. There, he stood up for people who were being bullied. He also became a lightweight boxer.  McCain had conflicts with higher-ups, and he was disinclined to obey every rule, which contributed to a low class rank (894/899) that he did not aim to improve. McCain did well in academic subjects that interested him and he graduated in 1958.

USS Forrestal

On July 29 1967, John narrowly survived the first of many near-death experiences during his lifetime while preparing to take off on a bombing mission over North Vietnam from his ship, the USS Forrestal. A missile accidentally fired from a nearby plane struck the fuel tanks on John's plane and created a deadly inferno aboard the ship. John barely escaped the fiery disaster that killed 134 men, injured hundreds more and destroyed 20 planes.

He entered Harvard Law School in 1988. In 1990, The New York Times reported his election as the Harvard Law Review's "first black president in its 104-year history". He completed his Juris Doctor degree magna cum laude in 1991.
 

Hanoi Hilton

John McCain's capture and imprisonment (for 5 1/2 years) began on October 26, 1967. He was flying his twenty-third bombing mission over North Vietnam, when his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi. McCain fractured both arms and a leg, and then nearly drowned when he parachuted into Truc B?ch Lake in Hanoi. After he regained consciousness, a mob attacked him, crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt, and bayoneted him. He was then transported to Hanoi's main Hoa Lo Prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton".]

On returning to Chicago, Obama directed a voter registration drive. As an associate attorney with Miner, Barnhill & Galland from 1993 to 1996, he represented community organizers, discrimination claims, and voting rights cases. He was a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1993 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004
 

National War College - Fort McNair, Washington D.C.

After being released from prison in Vietnam, McCain returned to United States. McCain underwent treatment for his injuries, including months of grueling physical therapy and attended the National War College in Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. during 1973-1974.

Something Amazing Happened on January 3rd, 2008. On the road to the White House, Barack Obama wins the IOWA Caucuses beating out establishment candidates Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in a predominantly white state
 

Xcel Energy Center - St. Paul, Minnesota

McCain clinched a majority of the delegates and became the presumptive nominee with wins in the Ohio primary and Texas primary on March 4, with the nomination to be made official in September at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
