United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. There, he stood up for
people who were being bullied. He also became a lightweight boxer.
McCain had conflicts with higher-ups, and he was disinclined to obey
every rule, which contributed to a low class rank (894/899) that he
did not aim to improve. McCain did well in academic subjects that
interested him and he graduated in 1958.

USS Forrestal
On July 29 1967, John
narrowly survived the first of many near-death experiences during
his lifetime while preparing to take off on a bombing mission over
North Vietnam from his ship, the USS Forrestal. A missile
accidentally fired from a nearby plane struck the fuel tanks on
John's plane and created a deadly inferno aboard the ship. John
barely escaped the fiery disaster that killed 134 men, injured
hundreds more and destroyed 20 planes.

reported his election as the Harvard Law Review's "first black
president in its 104-year history". He completed his Juris Doctor

John McCain's capture
and imprisonment (for 5 1/2 years) began on October 26, 1967. He was
flying his twenty-third bombing mission over North Vietnam, when his
A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi. McCain fractured
both arms and a leg, and then nearly drowned when he parachuted into
Truc B?ch Lake in Hanoi. After he regained consciousness, a mob
attacked him, crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt, and bayoneted
him. He was then transported to Hanoi's main Hoa Lo Prison,
nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton".]

from prison in Vietnam, McCain returned to United States. McCain
underwent treatment for his injuries, including months of grueling
physical therapy and attended the National War College in Fort
